Psalm 50 — Derek: Meditating on the Way
Bobby Valentine and John Mark Hicks describe the significance of Psalm 50. it is a prophetic song, the voice of the “preacher” (priest/prophet) in the assembly of Israel. God speaks through the Psalmist to address two groups of people assembled: (1) those who misunderstand the significance of worship, and (2) hypocrites who confess the covenant with their lips but their hearts and actions are breaking the covenant.
In this assembly the preacher functions as a prosecutor before the divine judge who rebukes the people and invites them to renew their covenant with God through a thanksgiving meal (eating with God in communion) and recommitting to keep their covenantal vows.
Assembly recognizes the presence of the holy and righteous God, and our response is covenant oath and covenant meal where we renew our covenant with God.
