Absence
Over the next week I will be separated from technology–cell phones, television, computers–for a renewal retreat where I will specifically journey through my past wounds to seek deeper healing. Consequently, I will not–of course–be available to respond to any comments and no further posts will appear for the week.
I wanted to let you know this because in the past I have lapsed in my blogging for months. Upon my return I plan to continue to post materials that I have used in teaching over the years. Eventually I would like this site to contain all my published and unpublished (class handouts, etc.) writings–if for nothing else, so that have them all in one place myself! 🙂
Also, I thought I would use this post to note some of the materials I have posted but about which I have said nothing….just so I can tag them and categorize them. Feel free to ignore this part. 🙂
In addition to items I have previously noted in other posts, on my Bible Class page there are a couple of handouts. One handout outlines and offers a general teaching perspective for working through Thomas Olbricht’s His Love Compels (his NT theology from College Press) and it is available here.
Another outline is a series of teaching guidelines I did for the teachers and placed online for students in Bible Classes at Woodmont Hills. As Rubel Shelly and John York preached through the Epistles of John, I provided outlines to the Bible Classes as they studied each week the texts from which Rubel and John preached. On my General Materials page is the Teaching the Johannine Epistles handout that was distributed to ministers at the Northwest Sermon Seminar in Portland, OR in the late 1999. It contains homilectic suggestions and duplicates some of the material in the teaching outline of 1 John. The teaching outline, however, is more recent.
Another handout on the Bible Class page is a chart entitled the “Meals with Jesus in Luke.” This chart is contained in my book Come to the Table but I offer it here as a convenient handout for those who might want to use it.
Also on my General Materials page is a very brief article on abortion from a theological perspective. It was written for Harding University Graduate School’s Bulletin 39.3 (May 1998), 1.

Mark Moore has some great information on the Meals of Jesus on his site as well.

May you be courageous on your retreat, and may the Poetic Benediction of Num 6:24-26 rest upon you as you open yourself to the healing love of our Father.

Hey John Mark, I pray that this renewal time will serve to strengthen, encourage and guide your heart. Thanks for sharing the fruit of your labors. Vaya con Dios, mi hermano!

Enjoy your renewal time.
At some point in the future when you want to write another book, I still think you need to write one on the subject of hermenuetics. I still occasionally read from the extensive notes you distributed in class.
Blessings,
Rex

John Mark, I discovered your site through Bobby Valentine’s. What an insightful resource it is — and will no doubt continue to be as you add class materials. I really, really benefited from your discussion of Hezekiah’s Passover — surely grace in all its facets embodied.
I’m going to try to get your book on the Lord’s Supper. In my own attempt to “reimagine” that experience, I have written a book of poems and devotionals for that purpose, and that book is free to download on one of my Web sites, http://www.latayne.com. (Two of the poems may be familiar to you — they are in our Songs of Faith and Praise hymnbook — Howard Publishing.)
Some of the poems on my site deal with suffering and spiritual struggle — I hope they will be of help to you and readers of your site. But be warned — they’re not “sweetness and light” poems.
I also congratulate you for taking some time away for spiritual renewal. I just finished two books, one of which I have been working on for five years (the updating of my previously-published book, The Mormon Mirage, which will be re-released by Zondervan later this year.) There is nothing like solitude and focused contemplation to clear away the cobwebs of the world.
May God bless you.
Your sister,
Latayne C Scott

Thank you, everyone, for your blessings. I will, hopefully, return to posting. At the moment, I am resting from my rest. 🙂
